Happy Hump Day Fellow Breeders!

Lag is a term we use a great deal. But do you really understanding what it means, what causes it or how to deal with it?

Lag is the informal name for slow reaction time when using Second Life. It is a symptom with a variety of causes. When you are logged in, there are a number of components which have to all work smoothly to minimize lag. These are your computer, the Internet connection, and the Linden Lab servers and internal network and databases.

Your Computer (Client)
Second Life is very graphics-intensive. Everything you see has to be drawn by your graphics card. When there is too much to draw, when your computer cannot keep up, you experience client-side lag. Second Life Viewers use a lot of bandwidth to communicate with the Linden Lab servers. Thus using a lot of your computer resources. Therefore, your computer must have enough capacity to run the Viewer program with minimal problems. Use a 64-bit version of Windows if you can.

Symptoms of client-side lag include jerky or sluggish movement.

The Internet (Network)
Second Life requires constant communication with the Linden Lab servers. A connection speed of at least 500 kilobits per seconds (kbps) is needed to run Second Life adequately. If you are on a wireless router, or entirely wireless connection you may not be getting these speeds. Always use a hardwired connection if possible.

Symptoms of a poor connection include:

  • failure of your avatar or textures to rez;
  • object information not displaying in hover tips when you mouse over the object;
  • teleport failure;
  • random disconnections.

Linden Lab (Server)
The Linden Lab servers have to both keep track of everything happening in a map region, and send that information to all the users who can see the region. If they have too much to do, they will slow down the simulator frame rate so as to not lose data. If too much communication is required to fetch data about objects and send them to all the users, it can become backlogged.

How do you know which is causing lag?

Your viewer is equipped with Performance Tools to help you identify the source. A Lag Meter and Statistics Bar can be found under the Advanced Menu (press Ctrl-Alt-D to enable Advanced on the top menu, if it isn’t.) You can, also, display the Lag Meter by clicking the meter at the top right hand corner of your viewer (Firestorm).

The Lag Meter breaks lag down into Client, Network, and Server lag, with corresponding indicators for each lag type.

Below are a few messages that may show on the Lag Meter:

The Statistics Bar can be accessed by pressing Ctrl-Shift-1. This tool presents a detailed list of information about the performance of your computer and Second Life. While the sheer amount of information can be confusing, knowing what to look for can tell you a lot about what’s going on in Second Life.

There are a few things on the Statistics Bar that you want to take note of. These are:

FPS (Frames Per Second): This is the number of times per second your computer is redrawing/refreshing what’s on the screen. Higher numbers are better. The lower this number is, the more overworked your system is. If it drops too low, you can be disconnected from Second Life or the viewer might unexpectedly crash.

Packet Loss: The amount of data being lost as it travels between your computer and the server. Significant packet loss results in perceivable network lag. Packet loss might be caused by a dying server (in which case everyone in the region would be experiencing it), a bad connection between you and Second Life (possibly a bad router between your ISP and Second Life, or congestion at your ISP), or problems on your local network (wireless networking, or internet security or firewall software on your computer).

Ping Sim: This is how long it takes data to go from your computer to the region you’re currently in. This is largely dependent on your connection to the Internet. If Ping Sim is high but Ping User is not, the server might be having problems. Ideally, this should be under 200.

Time Dilation: The physics simulation rate relative to realtime. 1.0 means that the simulator is running at full speed.

Sim FPS: The simulator frame rate. This should always be the same as the physics frame rate. A value of 45.0 means things are running well.

To interpret the Sim FPS performance of your region:

45 FPS: The highest possible value. No action necessary.
35 – 44 FPS: This is quite good; you don’t need to tune if it never goes below 35 FPS.
20 – 35 FPS: This is slow, and should be noticeable. Adjustment is needed to improve your region’s performance.
10 – 20 FPS: This is not so great.
0 – 10 FPS: This is pretty much terrible.

Even Amaretto updaters won’t work on sims with a high load. Dilation needs to be above .65 and region FPS must be above 25 for the updaters to work.

Spare Time: The amount of time that is available or unused. The higher the better. When this dips to a lower number your region may be experiencing lag. If free time is used up scripts will stall.

What can you do to reduce lag?

  • Turn off animations and movement. Moving objects can collide with each other and can contribute significantly to the time your region takes to perform the physics calculations.  *Note that sound has a minimal effect and hover text have no effect whatsoever;
  • Save/freeze your builds – temp-rezzer scripts are big contributors to lag;
  • Consider using skyboxes – the sky alone is very graphics-intensive;
  • Remove excessive/large textures – it is a good idea to avoid using textures greater than 512 x 512 pixels;
  • Remove texture change, moving or flashing objects;
  • Since your viewer always has to pay attention to your avatar, remove scripted attachments your avatar may be wearing, Make sure that your hair, shoes and other attachments have no resize scripts in them – this will reduce your Maximum Complexity value;
  • Sitting instead of standing can reduce lag significantly. Lag caused by avatar movement is the number one cause of region lag and, if bad enough, scripts simply will stop running.

Hopefully, with this knowledge and these tips, you can reduce any lag issues you may have and have a more enjoyable Second Life experience.

Till next time…HAPPY BREEDING!

Happy Hump Day Fellow Breeders!

In recent days, I have seen several ads posted for “points for sale”. So I want to address the buying and selling of vendor points.

Amaretto Ranch Breedables offers a unique point system for all breedables. Horse Haven, Puppy Paradise, Bird Sanctuary and Ponie Oasis are all great ways to keep your breeding stock under control and earn points while doing so. The number of points differ based on age/cycles/descendants and traits.

When you decided you no longer want a breedable, simply click on it to pull up it’s menu. From the menu, click on settings, click on Haven/Paradise/Sanctuary/Oasis and then confirm sending your breedable to Haven/Paradise/Sanctuary/Oasis. Before you confirm, you will see the point value of that breedable (posted in local chat) and a little notice that once a Horse/K9/Bird/Ponie has been sent to Haven/Paradise/Sanctuary/Oasis it cannot be reversed.

You can then use the points you have built up to purchase some very useful items from the corresponding vendors. From consumables to special breedables. Please note that all items directly out of the vendor are no transfer. ~HAVEN POINTS ARE NOT TRANSFERABLE!~

Find a vendor here:

Get a list of point values here:
Horse Haven:
Puppy Paradise:
Bird Sanctuary:
Ponie Oasis:

Haven/Paradise/Sanctuary/Oasis breedables are transferable only AFTER they have been birthed. These special breedables are listed below with their point value.

Horse Haven

Memorable Haven Horse Bundle 250,000
Haven Horse – Eagle Spirit 250,000
Haven Donkey 250,000
Haven Horse – Darkness 250,000
Haven Horse – Anubis 250,000
Haven Horse – Kaiila 250,000
Haven Horse – Zebracorn 250,000

Haven Horse – Rising Phoenix 250,000

Puppy Paradise

Amaretto Sanctuary Bird – Wind it Up Nest Rooster 75,000

Ponie Oasis

Amaretto Oasis Ponie – Mardi Gras Homme 400,000
Amaretto Oasis Ponie – Mardi Gras Femme 200,000

So unless you or someone else has enough points to purchase one of these breedables, birth it and transfer it, please be cautious in selling or buying points. My suggestion would be to set the birthed breedable for sale and sell or buy it that way. It is our hope that by covering this topic you will be able to protect yourself and your investment. Caveat emptor – “Let the buyer beware!”

Till next time….HAPPY BREEDING!
