A rip tide, or riptide, is a strong, offshore current that can pull swimmers away from the shore. It is caused by the tide pulling water through an inlet or a narrow gap along a barrier beach, or by a tidal flow of water within enclosed areas. It usually forms in between crashing waves and appears as a band of discolored water.
