Socks on horses, natural or artificial? The answer can be BOTH. The natural sock is a coat marking, usually white, that a horse is born with that extends higher than the fetlock but not as high as the knee or hock.
An Artificial sock for horses is one put on to support tendons and ligaments and protect against rundown abrasions and interference injuries. They are also used to cover wounds, keep flies off horses' legs, and sometimes put on a horse because they add a little flair.
Amaretto likes to add colorful traits to horses, so in 2013 they added socks. The Sock trait was introduced with the Limited Edition 2013 Valentine Horses that were on sale from February 7, 2013 through February 22, 2013.
On February 7, 2013 a twist to the Limited Edition 2013 Valentine Horses was announced. If you bred any combination of a Limited Edition 2013 Valentine Horse Beloved or Cherish with each other you could have the ability to get a new trait called Socks. The first four colors were pink, red, blue, and orange
From October 1, 2013 through October 9, 2013 the Limited Edition 2013 Fall Horses were on sale. By breeding these Limited Editions with any other horse you had the chance at getting 1 of 4 new Sock colors, Black, White, Green or Rainbow.
On Tuesday December 16th Amaretto released the Amaretto 2014 Holiday Horses at all Amaretto Locations! These special horses were on sale until January 1, 2015!
Hiding inside these holiday LEs were even more surprises, including the Candy Cane and Winter Snowflake socks, which you could get by breeding them to any horse.
Spring Editions were available from March 20th, 2018 to Tuesday April 3, 2018! Hiding inside these Spring Editions was the Daisy & Plumeria Sock!
Remember, socks occupy the same trait slot as hoof paint so you can't have both on the same horse. Another trait that occupies this slot is Leg Null. A Null trait is an “Invisible trait”, a placeholder. These placeholders were implemented as a way to allow the breeder to have a maximum trait horse but still look the way they want it to look. Socks are just one of many features that can be combined with traits to change the look of a horse, maybe color coordinated.
The Sock trait CAN be passed on, so happy breeding!
